15 July 2018– Ministry of Sport and Recreation South Africa has outlined its planned activities for the upcoming Tata Madiba Birthday Celebration. The planned upcoming Centenary Birthday Celebration activities are dedicated to the former national iconic stalwart, Tata Nelson Mandela, philanthropist of note who dedicated his life for the emancipation of South Africa.
The 18th of July has been declared an annual International Nelson Mandela Day by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This day has always been a day that upholds and recognises the late President Nelson Mandela’s commitment to human rights, ubuntu and his philanthropist spirit.
This year we celebrate Tata Madiba’s birthday under a theme: “Be The Legacy: Celebrating the birth of a world icon and a life of service”.
Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa, the Honourable Tokozile Xasa, will therefore be embarking on a number of activities in recognition of Tata Nelson Mandela’s Birthday listed as follows:
17 July 2018:
Minister Xasa will officially Open 2018 BRICS Gameswith an opening that will showcase the vibrancy of South African culture and heritage whilst welcoming BRICS nations that will be taking part. The event opening is scheduled to take place at Wits University, Old Mutual Sport Hall commencing at 17H00.
18 July 2018:
BRICS Games commence.
19 July 2018:
Minister Xasa and Sport and recreation South Africa will be undertaking a Ministerial Outreach programme at Elias Motswaledi Local Municipality. The Ministerial Outreach is set to commence with‘I choose to be active Walk’scheduled for 09H00. Minister and the Department’s objective of the walk is to encourage the community of Thlogotlou to stay physically active. The event will then be followed by a sport facility and sport equipment handover culminating with Minister Xasa symbolically kicking off exhibition games.
The programme for the 19thJuly 2018 is outlined as follows:
09H00: ‘I choose to be active 5KM walk’ commencing at Monsterlus Stadium
11H00 – 13H00: Monsterlus Stadium sport facility and equipment handover
13H00 – 16H00: Exhibition games symbolic kick off and display.
