12 July 2018 – As the season reaches fever pitch in the Sasol Women’s League, all teams are coming out guns blazing with the hope of securing a place in the end of season Sasol National Championships by finishing at the summit. Things have heated up in the Eastern Cape is the battle for supremacy continues.

Relegation threatened Manchester Babes suffered yet another home loss as they went down to Ayakha Stars Ladies FC at the Jabavu Stadium. Babes are still rooted in the bottom three of the table with a mere 6 points from 12 games.

There was to be another away loss at Bridgemead Sports Field as Highbury FC were edged 1-0 by Red Roses Ladies FC to condemn the home team to last spot. Red Roses occupy fourth place but will have to keep their winning momentum if they hope to challenge the top teams.

Golden Stars then overwhelmed Sophakama Ladies 4-1 at the Dower Campus while Executive Ladies and Thunderbirds Ladies played out to an entertaining goalless draw at Nozolisa. The former missed their chance to put pressure on the top two while Thunderbirds consolidated their second place.

In other results, Eastern Rangers FC beat Bashee Eagles FC 2-1 in a tense encounter at New Rest Stadium. Both clubs still occupy top eight spots and will be hoping to climb the log during the second half of the season.

Birmingham City FC were victorious in their fixture away to Cumakala FC with an impressive 3-0 score-line in Queenstown, while table toppers City Lads continued their 100% record by thumping Amanqilo Birds in yet another win for away teams. The 3-0 victory at Thombo Sports Field was another warning to all rivals as Lads are now 12 from 12 with a fantastic goal difference of +54.

Lads coach Terry Mrwerwe shed some light into the team’s outstanding campaign thus far. “I think it’s the manner in which the girls have responded to what I ask of them. To win games you need to be fighting and working hard. We always aim to strengthen both tactically and technically in training too”, said the coach.

He also added: “We also have a lot of support behind the scenes from the chair lady, administrator and even our physio who treats our injuries”.

All teams are in action this upcoming Saturday (14th July).
