14 June 2018Banyana Banyana vice-captain, Refiloe Jane, is one of the nine Sports Management students from Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Marketing, Logistics and Sport Management within the Faculty of Management Sciences, who have joined the gsport Trust on a CATHSSETA-Sport Management internship to hone their skills as they look to break into the job market.

Jane, who is completing her Masters in MTech Marketing with a specialisation in sport, said: “As students, it is exciting to be part of this internship program with gsport. We appreciate the work the initiative does to promote women’s sport and it’s great to be a part of the movement to change the game for SA sportswomen.”

Speaking at the first ever #GoGirls Youth Talk at TUT Prestige Auditorium on Thursday, Jane encouraged the country’s youth to chase after their dreams.

“I have to say that the people who look up to me, also give me courage and motivation to work hard because it is very rare to find female student-athletes succeeding on and off the field. I want them to look at me and see that if I managed to do it, nothing will stop them from doing it,” she said

The internship program is funded by the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA) with a mandate to facilitate skills development within their sub-sectors through the disbursement of grants for learning programmes and monitoring of education and training as outlined in the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS).

In doing so, this platform is promoting the power of sport and academics while upskilling students for the future.

Dr Pam Serra, Section Head of Recreation and Sport Management within the Department of Marketing, Logistics and Sport Management at Tshwane University of Technology, said: “It is a real privilege and honour to be partnering with such a reputable sport entity that is so passionate about sport, specifically women in sport, such as gsport. This unique collaboration is an example of how two sport entities can come together to uplift and shape future managers in the sport environment.”

gsport Founder, Kass Naidoo, said: “This is an important partnership for gsport and I am excited for our interns who have already got stuck into work projects with the gsport team. Their presence has brought a wonderful buzz to the initiative and we are grateful to the academic Sport Management section for supporting gsport’s work.”

The Partnership between TUT’s Department of Marketing, Logistics and Sport Management and gsport4girls will run for three years and will see both institutions collaborate on initiatives to raise the profile of women’s sport and encourage Corporate South Africa to back our female athletes.
