31 May 2018 – A mere three years old, KwaZulu Natal’s Greytown-based Umvoti Football Club have big ambitions. The ABC Motsepe League kings of the province now look to secure National First Division (NFD) promotion as the all-important play-offs begin in Limpopo this week.

Umvoti product Mondli Dladla’s selection for the U20 national side is a great example of just how far this team has come.

SAFA.net caught up with team manager, Mr Bongani Msomi to get his thoughts on the club’s season and his hopes for the upcoming ABC Motsepe League Play-Offs at Turfloop.

“Yes we won our league but in all honesty it was a tough season. However, the technical staff, fitness of our players and good old fashion determination are what saw us through in the end”, said Msomi.

“There will be a lot on the line for the team, who were drawn in the same group as Steenberg United and Mangaung Unite. We will bring the fight and I am convinced we will win! We arranged some tough friendly games as preparation against teams similar to our group opponents and that should hold us in good stead.”

The manager informed SAFA.net that the players are already in the province to acclimatise to conditions and get some solid training in before the weekend. He hopes that possible promotion is just the beginning though.

“We are praying that we can reach the NFD, gain valuable experience and compete for a couple of seasons. We then aim to get into the Premier Soccer League and also do well there.”

The team has come a long way but Msomi rues the lack of sponsorships. “We require a sponsor to come on board. Traveling costs, hotels and salaries all add up. Hopefully by gaining NFD promotion the club will be noticed and get a solid backer soon” concluded the club manager.
