3 May 2018 –  The Sasol Women’s League is proving to be a thrill-a-minute across the country, none more so than in the Kwa-Zulu Natal stream.

SAFA.net managed to catch up with a Durban based club UKZN, a rising university team that have top four ambitions this season.

UKZN football coordinator Khulekani Mabuza provided some interesting insights on the club, their season thus far, various challenges and more. Having accumulated six points from their first three matches, Mabuza has every reason to feel optimistic.

“The season has just begun but is going well thus far. We are fairly happy but are always looking to improve.”

When asked about the challenges that the team has faced, he stated: “The main issue we have had so far are injuries. Key players such as Banyana Banyana star Kholosa Biyana are sorely missed but we will still push on.”

“Another challenge was the time period. Being a team of students, we had to wait until they returned in February after the holidays to start training.”

Mabuza and head coach Thinasonke Mbuli, who is also a part of the successful national women’s student team, have a strict training programmes in place as well as an inculcation of innovative tactics.

“The coach is currently focusing on fitness, converting of chances, positional play and defensive strategies. Last season even though we were potent in front of goal, we leaked too many at the back, so we are looking to tighten up.”

When outlining his plans and goals for this rising club, Mabuza did not mince words: “We are striving for a top four finish and I am confident that the coach and players will help that dream to materialize”, said Mabuza.

With an ambitious management team and astute coach (who was also a part of the successful Banyana  Banyana COSAFA Cup technical team), the sky is truly the limit for this hardworking team. They will have their work cut out this weekend though with an away fixture against Nxamalala Ladies at Impendle Sports Field on Sunday at 13:00.

In other notable fixtures, table-toppers Durban Ladies tackle Umlazi Arsenal, Barcelona FC take on Ntuzuma Ladies and Sunflower WFC entertain White City, in what will be a bumper weekend for KZN’s women’s football.
