2 May 2018 – The South African Football Association (SAFA) has congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns on winning the 2017/2018 Absa Premiership title. They clinched the title with a game still to play.

This is coach Mosimane’s third league honours with the Tshwane-based side, making him one of the most successful coaches for the champions.

He won the league in 2013/14, 2015/17 and now.

With this victory, Sundowns has now clinched their eighth league trophy, more than any other team in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns for a sterling job in winning the 2017/2018 league title. What is also pleasing is the way they achieved this feat.

“They played attractive football that was great to watch. After losing the title to Bidvest Wits last season, they vowed to claim it back, and they did so in style, with a match to spare. Well done to the Brazilians,” said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.

The SAFA boss also paid tribute to Sundowns followers who have raised the bar this season, club owner Patrice Motsepe and everyone involved in the club.

With the league title wrapped up, Sundowns will now turn their focus on the CAF Champions Legue tie against Wydad Casablanca this coming weekend.

“Sundowns has been the dominating force in South African football, and this was confirmed when they lifted the CAF Champions League in 2016. As we speak, they are our sole representatives in a CAF competition, which is an indication of their commitment of putting the country on the map,” added Mumble.

“By winning the league, they have further entrenched their stay in continental competition, something which will be beneficial to our national teams, especially Bafana Bafana. We say to head coach Pitso Mosimane and the rest of the team, good luck for this weekend, South Africa is behind you. Lift the flag higher, and we know you will,” said the SAFA CEO.

The Brazilians face Wydad in Group C on Saturday, 5 May in the first fixture of the CAF Champions League group stages.

The clash takes place at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

Kickoff is at 21h00.
