24 April 2018 – The Sasol Women’s league has kicked off with a bang as clubs aim to qualify for the end of season national championships.

The Eastern Cape stream was back with a bang this past weekend with some rather notable results, a particular stand-out being City Lads thumping 8-1 away victory over Manchester Babes in Uitenhage.

Lads coach Terry Mrwerwe provided some valuable insight into the result, the team’s overall preparation as well as his hopes for the upcoming season.

Even with an 8-1 score-line and a warning to all opposing teams, the coach wasn’t too excited with the overall performance and implores his team to keep improving.

“I was fairly happy with the result but we need to always be aiming for perfection, whether we win or lose. Our defence could have been much better in the first half but we let in a soft goal. It ended up being a game of two halves as we then improved and managed to score six goals in the second half.”

Talking about his rigorous preparation during the week, Mrwerwe has developed a strict regimen and routine for his players.

“We begin on Monday’s with fitness tests which are obviously very important. We then focus on ‘space creation’ on the upcoming days (for both individuals and as a team), while moving on to aspects such as formation, sprints and passing. Tactical and technical formations are also a big talking point”, said Mrwerwe.

Mrwerwe has always been part of the Lads system but is new to the coaching game. He vows to always keep learning as he attempts to polish the team into match winners and has big goals for the season ahead.

“We are a work in progress and are trying to build a team, not only for this season but for the future as well, especially with a possible national women’s league. We want to improve on last season’s third place and win the league”, said the coach.

With a proper plan in place combined with desire as well as hunger, there is little doubt that the City Lads ladies are destined for great things this Sasol League season.
