13 April 2018 – With just a few months to go before the ABC Motsepe National Play Offs, the Gauteng and Free State ABC Motsepe League streams are set for a photo finish with only a few rounds of matches remaining.
The race for top honours has intensified in Gauteng between Maccabi FC and JDR Stars in what is a repeat of last season where Maccabi stole it right at the end.
JDR are just two points clear of last season’s champions Maccabi FC after a hard fought 1-0 away victory over Alexandra Black Aces last weekend while Maccabi had to also dig deep for a win over Alexandra United to claim a vital 3 points with a 1-0 win.
Maccabi face the much improved Dube Continental at the Nike Centre on Saturday, 14 April and know that anything less than a win could see their closest rivals, JDR Stars pip them to the title.Stars on the other hand play host to Pretoria Callies at the TUT Stadium and will be gunning for all three points with just two matches of the season remaining.
Meanwhile, Mangaung Unite and Bloemfontein Young Tigers are tied on 61 points in the Free State stream, both well placed to represent the Free State province at the Play Offs in June.
Unite occupy the top spot mainly through their goal difference of 35 compared to the 33 of Young Tigers who have played a game extra. They have a tricky encounter against the unpredictable Harmony FC who are fifth on the log after having a much-improved season.
Tigers on the other hand have the Bloemfontein derby on their hands against Bloemfontein Celtic who still have a mathematical but highly unlikely chance of winning the league, occupying third spot with 53 points.
