9 April 2018 – The South African Football Association (SAFA) has joined scores of people in mourning the passing away of Washington DK Mokgadi – a retired SAFA Match Commissioner, former Professional Assistant Referee and also ex-Referee Instructor.

He passed away on Saturday, 7 April after a long illness at the age of 79.

Mokgadi, from Mangaung in the Free State was also the oldest Volunteer during the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament hosted by South Africa and was one of the well-known sportspeople in his province.

As a volunteer, he was mostly responsible for preparing the Free State Stadium pitch for all the international matches.

He has been described by many as a community builder who has touched the lives of many athletes.

“The South African football fraternity has lost a giant. Here was a man who lived his life servicing others. He lived for sports and was one of the most recognised sportsmen whose expertise varied from being a referee, a trainer and a coach for football, tennis and netball. He was what one can call an all-rounder,” said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.

“We are deeply saddened by his passing, and would like to wish his family strength during these difficult times. We also hope the entire sports family will be comforted. May his soul rest in peace.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalised.
