9 March 2018 – When SAFA ABC Motsepe League side Steenberg United found out that they would be playing Baroka FC in the Nedbank Cup last 16 clash this coming Saturday, their draw encouraged them.

This is because they will be facing the same Baroka side that made a name for themselves in local football while campaigning in the competitive and ever-improving improving ABC Motsepe League.

Steenberg goalkeeper Abdurghman White said playing in the Nedbank Cup against Baroka at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday will be a big motivation to the young players at the club.

“The energy this whole week has been one that we have not seen in a while. Of course, the players are anxious, but they are also excited. This is the biggest game we have played in a long time. What is encouraging for us is that we want to do what made Baroka a known team,” Abdurghman said.

“They made their name by beating big PSL teams. For us, it is even better because not long ago they were in the ABC Motsepe League. That means even though they have PSL and NFD experience, they are not too different to us,” said the Steenberg United shot stopper.

Abdurghman is not thinking about himself when he talks about how the Nedbank Cup can change Steenberg United, but about the youngsters in the team.

“Come to the Cape Flats. You will see for yourself why this is so important for us and for the whole league. Life is tough there and for us, the best way to make things better is if we help these youngsters go to the PSL and prove to other young guys that there is a better option. A safer and more human option,” Abdurghman said.

“It is even tough to recruit players. But leagues like the ABC Motsepe help. They make a difference. That is why we are also pushing in the league because it is all or nothing for us. We depend on this”.

The two teams will kick-off at 15h30 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. To make it to this round, Steenberg beat Orbit College 3-1.
