5 February 2018 – Ms Elizabeth De Koker was elected the new President of Thabo Mofutsanyana Region in the Free State, becoming only the second female President in SAFA’s 52 Regions.

Ms Koker joins Ms Emma Hendriks the President of Siyanda in the Northern Cape as the two female Presidents to break the long standing barrier in the previously male-dominated sport.

“I am very impressed with the number of women taking leadership position in our football and I am most excited about both Ms Koker and Hendriks for leading the way in the Regions.

“As per our resolution in the past Congress, we need more and more women within our structures to take leadership positions in our bid to empower our women,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan.

Dr Jordaan said the emergence of several women in football top positions was something he was relishing.

“We have always said as SAFA that we want the Association to be a representative of our society. Our women are in the majority and it is imperative that they occupy leadership positions,” he said.

In other SAFA Regions elections over the weekend, Mr Gay Mokoena retained his position in the Ehlanzeni Region in Mpumalanga while Sandile Mata was elected new President of Chris Hani Region.
