19 January 2018 – The South African Football Association joins the sporting fraternity and the rest of the country in mourning the sad passing of the seasoned activist, sports administrator and former ANC Member of Parliament, Mr Zandisile John Ncinane.
Mr Ncinane dedicated his life to the liberation struggle and in particular, the eradication of racial discrimination in sport and the creation of inclusive, non-racial sport. As a member of the National Sports Council (NSC) during the unity processes of the early 1990s, he was instrumental in the amalgamation of different sporting entities to create the national federations that we now have in South Africa. He was the first president of Athletics South Africa (together with Judge Deon Van Zyl) in 1992-93 and in 2001 was elected president of Border Rugby Union.
The President of SAFA, Dr Danny Jordaan expressed deep sadness at the passing of Mr Ncinane, whom he had served with in the processes leading to the establishment of SASCOC, as an MP in 1994-1999 under Dr Nelson Mandela, in the NSC and various other capacities. He added that Mr Ncinane will be remembered for his diligence, humility, humour and vibrant engagement.”
