29 December 2017 – Debutants La-Masia FC will lock horns with Senaoane Gunners in the final of the 2017 Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge that comes to end today (Friday, 29 December 2017).

The match takes place at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto.

Kickoff is at 15h00.

La-Masia booked their place in the final with a 2-0 victory over The Boys FC on Thursday, 28 December, while Gunners brushed aside Dzakaroski FC 2-1 in the other semi-final.

Bidvest Wits midfielder Xola Mlambo has applauded La-Masia FC, saying that the Westbury outfit is a favourite to win the tournament.

Mambo has also praised the standard of the tournament, adding that Gunners should brace themselves for a tricky encounter if they are to see themselves causing an upset in the final.

“I’m very impressed with the standard of football which’s on display here. It’s been very entertaining from the onset up until now. The matches are very competitive, hence people always go out of their way to sit and watch matches for the whole day, that’s mainly because it’s never a waste of time for them come through, given the quality that’s here,” said Mlambo.

“It’s good to see a team (La-Masia FC) which qualified ahead of my former side (Sabelo Super Stars FC who finished third in Group E) going all the way to the final of a tournament. They are very good side and I also do believe that they stand a good chance of lifting the trophy winning it,”  added Mlambo.

His belief in La-Masia winning it in their first appearance comes from having observed how the players fight for each other on the field – both in the attack and defence. Mlambo says La-Masia are easy on the eye and Gunners should pay close attention to central midfielder, Corbin ‘Zizou’ Woodington, if they are to stand a fighting chance against them.

“‘Zizou’ is very a good player,” said Mlambo. “He’s one of those midfielders who never spends too much time on the ball. His passing game is really good as well. He knows how to find his teammates with his pinpoint passes, and that’s what makes him deadly and sets him apart from the rest – he is a marvel to watch.”
