23 December 2017 – Known for their trickery on the field of play, Strokes FC decided to keep matters basic this time around in their clash against Dibabas FC at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville Soweto.

And that’s because Strokes knew very well that they would need nothing but a win in order for them to go through the last 16 of this year’s Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge.

Earlier in the day on Saturday afternoon (23 December 2017), Protea Glen FC, who were third in Group C, handed Kliptown Youth Development an 8-1 drubbing to move to second place on 13 points.

However, that qualification into the last 16 was short-lived as Strokes beat Dibabas FC to progress into the knockout rounds with 14 points.

Thabo Senong, who recently won his first ever trophy as head coach of the South African U20 Men’s National Team (Amajita) when he led them to the Cosafa Under-20 Championship triumph in Zambia, said that he was impressed with the standard of football in this tournament.

He added that the future of South Africa looked promising based on the quality he had seen.

“I’ve played in this tournament before (twice) before I moved into coaching,” said Senong. “This was about a decade ago. It feels great to be back now and I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far. There’s a whole lot of talent and it’s now my responsibility as a junior national team coach and scout as well, to identify the talent and make recommendations to our junior structures and PSL teams alike. ”

Talking about his first ever junior Cosafa Cup triumph, Senong added: “It feels great to have won the Cosafa Cup. It is my first trophy since I have become part of the SAFA coaching structures. However, there are a whole lot of challenges which still await me as an individual. I still have aspirations of coaching in the PSL some day. There’s still more work to be done from my side.”
