20 November 2017 – The captains of the respective teams to participate in the Football Legends Festival Cup at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto are getting their squads battle ready for the big day on Sunday 3 December 2017.
Four teams representing Soweto, Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni as well as two teams featuring former Banyana Banyana players will battle it out to win the Cup and to take bragging rights over their former teammates.
In the first match of the day, the teams from Tshwane and Ekurhuleni will contest for a spot in the semi-finals.
Tshwane captain, Edward ‘MaGents’ Motale has issued a rally cry for his team to take no chances against Jerry Sikhosana’s men and that he will personally mark the “Legs of Thunder” to make sure he does not get into the “eighteen yard area.”
In reply to Motale’s challenge, Sikhosana said that his players would simply be doing what they’ve always done during their playing years and that is to run rings around their opponents.
Sikhosana says that, “despite all the teams taking the tournament very seriously, it will be a great day for the fans to be entertained by these legends, who might have lost their pace, but certainly not their skills.”
In the second match of the day, Cyril Nzama’s Soweto team will take on Fani Madida’s Johannesburg legends.
Nzama has alluded that his teammates are very excited to play on the same side, whereas in the past they were opponents playing for clubs like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows respectively.
His counterpart, Madida pointed out that his players only have one mission in mind, and that is to bring to Cup to Johannesburg. He warned his opponents from Soweto that they better bring their ‘A-game’ to the match.
Portia Modise and Gloria Hlalele will each captain a team made up of former Banyana Banyana players representing Johannesburg and Tshwane respectively.
Both captains are looking forward to the day and are keen to re-unite with their former teammates and also to thank the fans for their support throughout the years.
The Festival is organised by the South African Masters and Legends Football Association (SAMLFA), which is an affiliated member of SAFA.
According to SAMLFA President, Buddha Mathathe, the association has partnered with the City of Johannesburg and Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) to make the day a memorable one for both players and fans alike.
The Festival is a culmination of SAMLFA-Gauteng’s executive elections, which saw former Bafana Bafana coach, Shakes Mashaba, being elected as its provincial chairman.
The Festival starts at 10am and will finish at 6pm.
