13 November 2017 – The race to the eagerly anticipated 2017 Sasol League National Championship has become clearer for sides in the North West and KwaZulu-Natal leagues.
Heading into this past weekend’s action, Sunflower FC were on the verge of clinching their first provincial title in KwaZulu Natal – they ensured that their destiny is in their own hands by collecting maximum points against Nxamalala Ladies on Sunday, 12 November.
A point in their final fixture will guarantee them the title.
With one final round of fixtures remaining, Sunflower hold a three-point lead, and, perhaps more importantly, they enjoy a +36-goal advantage over Durban Ladies. This means that should they fail to collect any points and Durban Ladies win their match and they are tied on points, Durban Ladies will still need to make up a 36-goal difference to win the title.
The situation is equally tense in the North West, with De’Scorpion and Golden Ladies going all out for the title. The former enjoys a three-point lead at the top of the table but have played one match more than their rivals and defending champions, Golden Ladies.
Should Golden Ladies win their remaining two fixtures, they will all but claim the title ahead of De’Scorpion due to their superior +49-goal difference.
The Sasol League National Championship will take place at the KaBokweni Stadium, Nelspruit from 5-10 December 2017. Nine provincial champions will vie for the ultimate honour of being crowned national champions.
The Sasol League takes place across all the nine provinces of South Africa. Matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoon and will culminate with the National Championships that take place over a period of one week towards the end of the year.
Sasol recently renewed their sponsorship of the country’s premier women’s football league, an initiative that has played an integral part in contributing to the growth and development of women’s football in South Africa for another four (4) years until 2021.
Teams that have qualified for the Sasol League National Championship include;
Free State: Bloemfontein Celtic
Eastern Cape: Thunderbirds Ladies
Mpumalanga: Coal City Wizards
Western Cape: Cape Town Roses
