21 October 2017 – The SAFA Extraordinary Constitutional Congress approved a number of amendments among them having four vice-presidents, creating additional secretariat positions and the introduction of the Super Cup to be overseen by the Association.

The Constitutional Congress was officially opened by Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation SA Hon Gert Oosthuizen. Also in attendance was COSAFA President, Phillip Chiyangwa amongst other dignitaries.

Among a raft of changes approved by the Congress were the elections of four SAFA Vice-Presidents of which one seat must be reserved for a woman with the other for the Chair of the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The remaining other two would be appointed by the National Executive Committee in line with CAF Statutes.

The Congress also agreed on the appointment of the Association’s COO and Group CFO as well as the introduction of the Super Cup that will be contested by PSL Champions, Nedbank Cup winners National First Division and ABC Motsepe champions.

Another change adopted was the consolidation of standing committee from over 20 to 14. This is also in line with the FIFA and CAF Statutes of consolidating various committees into efficient few.

Deputy Minister Oosthuizen asked SAFA to take full control of Schools Sport as it was the basis of football development. He said being in charge of schools would widen the selection pool for the country’s national teams.

He also touched on Gender Equality and the need for paradigm shift from the old order.

He said the club versus country issue continue to cause problems and asked for SAFA and Premier Soccer League to work hand in hand to find lasting solution to this matter.

Mr Oosthuizen wished Bafana Bafana well in the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches against Senegal next month.

COSAFA boss Chiyangwa said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan had the best CV among all CAF FA Presidents having overseen the hosting of the only FIFA World Cup to be hosted on the African continent.

Chiyangwa said the headquarters of the CECAFA and COSAFA conglomerate which he heads will be based in South Africa.

He told the delegates that he would win the upcoming ZIFA elections and asked the SAFA Congress to re-elect Dr Jordaan as the President in SAFA’s upcoming elections.

SAFA vice-president Dr Irvin Khoza praised Chiyangwa for his bravery and growing influence on the African football.
