5 October 2017 – The opening day of the 13th Edition of the Kay Motsepe National Championships got underway smoothly on Wednesday, 4 October 2017 at the Vaal University of Technology, in Vanderbijlpark.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) in conjunction with the Motsepe Foundation, Department of Basic Education and tournament sponsors Sanlam held the draw for the national championships on Tuesday, 3 October with games kicking off the following morning.
Group A saw Sekusile High School from KwaZulu Natal win their opening match 3-1 against Itshupeng High School from the North West, while DD Mabuza High School from Mpumalanga drew goalless in their opening fixture against Iketsetseng High School of the Free State.
Iketsetseng High School wrapped up their opening day of the Kay Motsepe National Championships with an epic 5-0 victory against Ishupeng High School in their second match of the day, while Rosina Sedibane High School from Gauteng played to a goalless draw with Sekusile High School.
Group B saw the Transnet School of Excellence draw 2-2 with Eastern Cape representatives Nqabebi High School, while KwaShuku High School of Mpumalanga lost their opening match against KwaZulu Natal’s Guzana High.
In the last fixtures of the day the School of Excellence won 4-1 against Mpumalanga’s Kwa Shuku High School in their opening match, while Eastern Cape’s Phangalele High School left it until late to walk away 4-3 winners against neighbours Nqabebi High School.
The National Championships continue today with Group C and D fixtures taking centre stage. The Kay Motsepe National Championships final to be held on Saturday, 7 October 2017 at 11h00.
The winners of the 2017 Kay Motsepe Schools Cup National Championships will walk away with a R1 Million cheque, the second runners up will get R600 000, while the bronze medallist will take home R 500 000, the 4th placed school earns themselves R 400 000.
