26 September 2017 It seldom happens that a coach may be unhappy even if his team has managed to win away but Baberwa FC coach Alex “Barnes” Bapela is not pleased. Bapela was speaking after his side beat Valencia FC 2-1 this past weekend in their opening match of the 2017/18 season of the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League.
According to the former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach, Baberwa, who are based in Midrand, did not play well in their match against Valencia.
“We played badly even though we won. We did not play well at all. I think a draw would have been a true reflection of the game even though we won. We were lucky to win,” Bapela said.
“We had a bad start in the match and that unsettled us. It made things work because they scored and we started playing long balls. I am happy with the result even though I am unhappy with the performance but we are hoping to change it in the coming match. We are happy with the three points,” Baberwa coach said.
The win took Baberwa to third on the log, a position that Bapela feels they can build on.
“It is still early but we will have to fight to maintain this. As long we can manage to win even if performances are not well, we will get the confidence we need to fight for the title,” Bapela said.
Baberwa’s next match will be against Maccabi FC on September 27 at the Alexandra Stadium.
The team is also preparing for the upcoming Nedbank Cup play-offs.
