12 September 2017 – A huge majority of players competing in the SAB League want to follow in the footsteps of league graduates such as Andile Jali, Themba Zwane and Happy Jele who have all graduated from the league to represent the country through the senior national team, Bafana Bafana.

But just like a number of youngsters, Free State born defender, Mojalefa Selumetse was not fortunate enough to make it into the professional scene but that did not deter him from identifying something that can give him a future through football.

Selumetse applied for the SAB League Study Assistance programme and the former centre back was accepted to study for a degree in Education at the Free State University of Technology.

The hard-tackling defender who helped his side win the SAB U21 National Championships in 2014 has since graduated from his studies and is now a fully qualified teacher at a High School in his community.

“Like any young footballer, the dream has always been to become a professional player but the opportunity provided by SAFA and SAB was more than just football. I was offered an opportunity to study for a career of my choice and thanks to SAFA and SAB, I am done with my studies and can’t wait for my graduation ceremony next year” said Selumetse.

The 23-year-old educator also urged players currently playing football to pursue an education as backup in case things don’t go well in football.

“My plea to players playing in the SAB League and any other league for that matter is that they should not give up on their football dreams but at the same time, it is highly important that they have an educational background. Football can be a very short career and if you don’t have anything to fall back on, you may find yourself in a very unfortunate situation” concluded Selumetse.
