6 September 2017 – Head coach of the South African women’s U20 national team, Maud Khumalo has named her squad of 23 that will compete for a place in next year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Basetsana are hard at work under the auspices of the former Banyana Banyana player who is assisted by former teammate who is also U17 coach, Simphiwe “Shorty” Dludlu.
The South Africans open their World Cup campaign against neighbours, Namibia in the first round of the qualifiers on Saturday, 17 September before traveling to Windhoek for the return leg on 30 September at the Sam Nokuma Stadium.
Khumalo’s squad ranges from players from the High Performance Centre academy as well as players that were identified from different corners of the country from the recent talent search initiative conducted by the SAFA Women’s Technical Team.
The squad is scheduled to play an away friendly with the senior women’s national team of Swaziland on Thursday evening ahead of their important clash against Namibia.
“We have selected a squad of very talented players who we believe can do well. There is still some work that needs to be done with the players but hopefully the friendly match against Swaziland will give us the opportunity to identify our shortcomings” said Khumalo.
Basetsana are yet to make a World Cup appearance and will be hoping to rewrite the history books by booking a place in the competitions set to take place in France between 7 and 26 September next year.
