10 August 2017 – In celebration of Women’s month, SAFA.net takes a look at some important information relating to the senior women’s national team, Banyana Banyana.

  • Banyana Banyana played their first official match back in 1993 against Swaziland which they won by an emphatic 14-0 victory.

 

  • Banyana Banyana have featured in two Olympic Games. Their first appearance was in the London 2012 Olympics under then coach, Siphiwe Mkhonza. The second time was during last year’s Rio Olympics under former coach, Vera Pauw. Banyana were eliminated in the group stages on both occasions.

 

  • Banyana have had a much better record on the African continent. They appeared in 11 CAF Women’s Championships (Now known as Women’s AFCON) and were runners up on four occasions (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012).

 

  • In 2006 and 2010 they finished in third position at the Women’s AFCON.

 

  • South Africa has hosted the Women’s AFCON on three occasions in 2000, 2004 and 2010.

 

  • Banyana Banyana’s first international match outside of Africa was against China. They played two matches where they lost 8-0 and 13-0 with the latter being their heaviest defeat in their history.

 

  • The team’s first victory over a nation outside of Africa was in 2000 where they beat Scotland by 2-0. This was at the Cyrus Women’s Cup.

 

  • South Africa is currently ranked 53rd on the FIFA Women’s rankings.

 

  • South Africa currently has 17 women footballers plying their trade overseas.
