17 July 2017 – Preparations for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup are in full swing as the first selection camp of the U20 Girls National Team got underway at SAFA’s Technical Centre in Johannesburg on Sunday, 16 July.

The selection camp follows the recent talent search conducted by the SAFA Women’s Technical team which travelled to Gauteng, North West, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape.

The three-day selection camp will see the girls being involved in a series of friendly matches under the watchful eye of U20 acting coach, Maud Khumalo and her technical staff for a place in the provisional “Basetsana” squad that will be gunning for a place in next year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

Khumalo, a former Banyana Banyana player who also holds a CAF A Licence coaching badge said that she was impressed with how the girls performed on their very first day in camp.

“I am quite impressed with how the girls played considering the fact that it was the very first day. There is a lot of talent that we saw and I believe there is more to come as the girls get used to playing with each other” said Khumalo.

The three-day selection camp will conclude on Tuesday, 18 July and will be followed by another camp involving players selected from the remaining provinces that are to be visited by the technical team.
