The SA Schools Championship involving U17 Boys and Girls which started on Monday, 10 July and finishes on Thursday, 13 July is in full swing in KwaZulu-Natal.

The annual tournament is kicked off on Monday and sees U17 boys and girls representing their respective provinces battle it out to be crowned champions of schools football.

After two days of action, the hosts are well on course to the semi-finals after winning two of their three matches and drawing one to go top of group A with seven points.  KZN got off to a jittery start in the opening match with a 1-1 draw against Western Cape before registering a 2-1 win over Limpopo and a hard fought 3-2 victory over Eastern Cape to go top of the group.

Western Cape could join the hosts in the semi-finals but must first overcome a tricky Eastern Cape side who are hot on their heels in third spot.

Moving over to group B, Gauteng have been ruthless in their three games, registering nine points after a 2-0 win over KZN XI, a 1-0 win over Mpumalanga and another hard fought 1-0 victory against Northern Cape. They top with nine points followed by Mpumalanga who are tied on six points with Free State.

Gauteng girls have been as dominant in the girls’ division, registering three consecutive wins to go top of Group A while Mpumalanga and Western Cape are hot on their heels with six points.

Free State narrowly top Group B with seven points after two victories and a draw while closely followed by Eastern Cape on six points from four matches.
