Bidvest Wits Youth coach, Ashley Makhanya believes the South African Football Association (SAFA) is on the right track with the coaching education that ensures that they attend coaching courses.
Makhanya is a part of a group of 35 coaches attending the 10-day CAF/SAFA A License Coaching Course at the SAFA Technical Centre, south of Johannesburg – two of the participants are women.
This is the 3rd and last phase of the course. Phase 1 was held in December 2016 and was followed by Phase 2 in January 2017.
Phase 3 started on Friday, 2 June and will run until Sunday, 11 June 2017.
“I have to applaud SAFA for these courses, but more importantly be grateful to the instructors that facilitate the courses. If it was not for the likes of Steve Coetzee and Desmond Lewis many of us would not have learnt some the things that we know about coaching. The SAFA Coaching Courses are great because they are very detailed, and the different levels allow for a coach to grow step by step,” said Makhanya, a former Bidvest Wits player.
“The more coaches we have attended these courses the better our football will be, we will continue to advance because more coaches will have an education behind them rather than just passion. If you look at what is happening recently, more clubs are competing international and the junior national teams are qualifying for major tournaments – which shows that the quality of coaching has improved over the years.”
Some of the topics covered in the course include:
- Theory and practical: Agiligy Coordination/Mental Training
- Match Observation
- Team Building/Team Leadership
- Group Dynamics
- Types of Analysis
- Fluctuations in Form
- Women in Football
- Theory of Physical Training
- Theory of Football
Some of the participants are former players like: Makhanya, Ricardo Katza, Calvin Motloung, Raymond Seneo, Sipho Vilakazi, Duncan Lechesa and Duran Francis
At the end of the course, they will be assessed by the instructors under the watchful eye of CAF Assessor Honour Janza and the results sent to CAF for verification.
They will then be able to graduate.
The course is tutored by Steve Coetsee and Frans Mogashoa (Local CAF Instructors) as well as Desmond Lewis (SAFA Instructor).
SAFA Assistant Technical Director, Fran Hilton-Smith, also delivered a lecture on Women In Football.
