Acornbush United moved one step closer to securing the Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League title, while FC Benfica boosted their hopes of survival.

Acornbush headed into week 24 with the aim of clinching the league title, although their lead had been cut from 17 points to 14, following TS Galaxy FC’s win during the week against with their game in hand.

Galaxy and Acornbush then locked horns at the Kabokweni Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but it was the latter who secured a 2-0 win on match day 24 to restore their 17-point lead at the summit.

The victory means Acorbush only need one point from their remaining six games to be crowned Champions in Mpumalanga.

Switching focus to the foot of the table, Maphakathi Academy FC suffered a setback after going down 2-1 to Forek Academy at the Themba Sinamela Stadium

Benfica, who sit in 14th spot, boosted their chances of survival with a 3-0 win over Barberton City Stars FC to move one point behind Maphakathi.

Mhluzi Black Rangers are not safe just yet, after their 1-1 with Lumoja FC left them hovering two points above the drop zone in 13th position. Premier United still have a mathematical chance of surviving, although they sit at the foot of the table, seven points behind Benfica.
