There were goals galore on the the first day of action at the 2016 Sasol League National Championships currently underway in Mosselbaai, Western Cape.

The event is being held at the D’Almeida Stadium.

In just three matches played on the opening day, an impressive 19 goals were scored, with City Lads Ladies of Eastern Cape accounting for ten of them.

They walloped Golden Ladies of 10-2 in a one-sided match – at half time the score was 6-0.

Andisiwe Ndesi scored a hattrick, while Nosipho Bottoman and Phakama Duru grabbed a brace each. Nolusindiso Plaatjie, captain Lumka Mjana and second half substitute Nwabisa Kolisi also found the back of the net.

Golden Ladies had to wait for substitute Keamogetswe Matjiane to pull one back in the 71st minute before Jeanet Mokota got the second five minutes later.

Duru, who scored in the 30th and 61st minutes, was chosen Diski Queen of the Match.

UWC also had Banyana Banyana players Leandra Smeda, Amogelang Motau and Thembi Kgatlana in their starting line-up – but could not stop Durban Ladies claiming victory.

The much-anticipated clash ended with the KZN side emerging 2-0 winners.

Just a few hours after arriving in Mosselbaai from Cameroon with Banyana Banyana, midfiedler Silindile Ngubane won herself the Diski Queen of the Match award after playing a sterling role in the match – she opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Nomakhosi Zulu sealed the win in the 79th minute.

In the last match of the day, Bloemfontein Celtic defeated Coal City Wizzards 3-2.

Day Two will see City Lads Ladies trying to continue from where they left off – they face Kanatla Ladies of Limpopo at 14h00, and on the opposite field Celtic will be up against Northern Cape’s Richmond Ladies In the other match.

JVW, who have the most players from Banyana Banyana (6) among the squads in Mosselbaai, will lock horns with UWC who are still licking their wounds.

Kickoff is at 16h30.
