New Bafana Bafana striker Lars Veldwijk’s father Harry has flown all the way from Netherlands to come and support his son in his ‘new venture’ with the South Africa’s Senior National team.

Veldwijk senior attended Bafana Bafana’s afternoon training session at Peter Mokaba stadium on Thursday where he saw his son go through the paces with his new teammates.

“I am a bit nervous but excited at the same time. This is a big moment for the boy and I wish him all the best,” he said.

Harry Veldwijk said he had flown from Netherlands on Tuesday and arrived in the country on Wednesday and flew to Polokwane on Thursday in what he describes as an exciting moment for the family.

“I was excited the very first day I heard he had been called to Bafana Bafana. It was an emotional moment because it meant a return of the whole family to our roots here in South Africa,” said Harry who left the country when he was 14 but born in the East Rand in Gauteng.

Veldwijk senior said it was his wish that Lars makes a difference in the Bafana Bafana squad in their quest to reach the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018.

Harry said he had two sons with Lars being the first born and Nicky who is a qualified medical Doctor.

On when he discovered Lars’ talent in playing football, Harry said the tall striker had the love of the sport from his childhood.

“He has been a footballer through and through.”

In conclusion he said Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Senegal was the biggest game for Lars since he turned professional.
