So excited is the family of Lars Veldwijk’s call up to the senior national team that his father Harry is travelling to Polokwane to see his son in action against Senegal on Saturday.

“My father will be among the crowd on Saturday. He is coming here in few days time and will be watching Bafana Bafana in action on Saturday,” said Lars.

The new Bafana Bafana striker looked sharp at the opening training session in blazing heat at Peter Mokaba Stadium and oozed confidence that he wants to do well for his country.

“Everyone wants to go to Russia 2018 World Cup. That is every player’s dream to play at the highest level and they don’t come bigger than the World Cup,” said the imposing 1.97m tall striker.

The Kortjies FC of Belgium player said he was relishing the prospect of playing against Senegal on Saturday and hopes he will put smiles on South African football fans.

“I have been well received here; the people are fantastic, they have welcomed me and my new teammates are terrific. There has been positive energy all round and I am so excited to be here.

The only minor setback has been the blazing heat but that is why we came here earlier; by Saturday we have adjusted and should be fine,” added Lars.

The giant striker said he wanted to make the supporters of his new home proud, repay the confidence shown on him by the coach and in the process help South Africa reach Russia.

On what he knows about African football, Lars said he followed a bit of South African football but was aware how tough Senegal was considering the number of top players plying their trade in top European leagues.

“They (Senegal) are good team but I think we should have a good measure of them on Saturday, more so because we will be spurred on by our own supporters.”

The Bafana Bafana versus Senegal game will take place at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium and kicks off at 15h00.

Tickets to the match are on sale at Computicket, Shoprite and Shoprite Checkers Stores around the country and are going for R60 all round.
