At a ceremony attended by SAFA Cape Town President Mr Norman Arendse and his entire executive and several present and past football administrators, Dr Jordaan once again called national team coaches not to confine their call ups locally but to go abroad and look for new talent that will take South African football to the next stage.
Giving a chronological narration of the early development of the sport in this country, Dr Jordaan agreed with Mr Arendse that the core roots of the country’s football were from this particular region and emphasised the need to take excellence and development to the next stage.
“Football is a sport which requires perseverance and dedication but also brings friendship, camaraderie and relationships. This is the sport that has created heroes who are embraced by the entire country,” he added.
The SAFA President said if the country was going to succeed on its Vision 2022 whose fundamental philosophy is sustainable success in the coming years, development of the sport was a non-negotiable path.
He said it was for this reason that part of Vision 2022 was to increase the numbers of those participating in football from the current 3.5 million to more than 5 million because football was a sport loved by people from all walks of life.
“Nothing moves and touches the nation more than this sport hence it is imperative to recognise excellence of our young players, administrators and all those involved in sport. We need more Bafana Bafana players from this Region, we need more Banyana Banyana to come from here and many other junior national teams.
But for the sport to continue growing, we need corporate South Africa to come to the party and help develop football,” said Dr Jordaan.
