The South African u17 Men’s National Team, Amajimbos, is still in with a chance to play in the final of the inaugural BRICS u17 Football Cup.

The five-nation tournament is currently underway in Goa, India.

It features Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Amajimbos have already played three matches – beating the hosts 1-0 in the first clash, and followed it up with a goalless draw against China. But Molefi Ntseki’s charges lost their third match 3-0 against Brazil.

South Africa has already amassed four points from the three matches.

They have to beat Russia on Thursday, 13 October 2016 at 16h30 South African time to stand any chance of reaching the final.

Russia has six points after wins over India and China, but went down to Brazil.

Anything other than a win for South Africa will hand Russia a place in the final against Brazil, who booked their place with the victory over Amajimbos.

The South Americans have now won three out of three – earlier they beat China and Russia.

The third placed team will then face China while India has been eliminated despite being left with one match to play. The hosts are taking on Brazil who are the highest scoring team in the tournament with seven goals so far and are yet to concede.

The Russians let in three but managed to score five of their own – the bulk coming from the 4-1 win against China.

South Africa squandered numerous scoring opportunities in their game against China and Brazil and now find themselves with only one goal in three matches – they conceded three, all from Brazil.

China has a porous defence – letting in six goals and scoring two in four matches.

But the stats of the host nation do not make for a good read – they are yet to register a point, have not scored a goal and let in three in as many matches.

The teams that finish in first and second place will contest the final on Saturday, 15 October at the Fatorda Stadium, kicking off at 12h00 SA time.

Those that finish in third and fourth place will face off also face off in an earlier kickoff at the same venue.
