Day 2 of the 12th Edition of the Kay Motsepe National Championships got underway smoothly despite the tournament being moved from the University of Johannesburg to the Albion Football Club in Frorida North due to the student strikes taking place.
The decision to move the tournament was taken by the South African Football Association (SAFA) in conjunction with the Motsepe Foundation and the Department of Basic Education.
On the field of play, Rosina Sedibane from Gauteng topped Group A with a clear 9 points after winning their first three matches, while Gaopalelwe High School from the North West are yet to secure any points following three consecutive losses in the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup National Championships currently underway.
Thembalethu from the Western Cape received a 4-0 hiding from Rosina Sedibane, while Benny’s Care defeated Gaopalelwe 4-1.
In the last match of Group A on Day two, KwaZulu Natal was well represented by Glenwood High School, who won their match 4-0 against Eastern Cape-based Ncedo High School.
Group B log leaders Luckoff from the Western Cape emerged 2-1 winners Dr Cingo from Free State. Luckoff also disposed of Eastern Cape’s Charles Morgan 5-1.
Current national champions, Clapham High School from Gauteng, will have to dig deep if they are to retain their title. They secured their first win of the tournament on day two when they beat Charles Morgan 5-0 in the morning match and Sikhulile from Mpumalanga 7-0 in the afternoon match.
Charles Morgan and Sikhulile High Schools are currently bottom of group B with 3 points each after only securing one win each thus far.
Harmony High School from the Free State will be looking to compete for the R1 million winner’s prize money as they have also secured 9 points from their first three matches – with win against Hasani Mninginisi from Limpopo and Tshedimosetso from the North West.
Sekusile from the Eastern Cape finished day 2 second on top of Group C after they won 3-2 against Langberg and 4-1 against AJ Ferreira.
The National Championships will continue on Day 3 at the Albion Football Club in Florida North, as team’s battle it out for the all important final which will take place on Saturday, 8 October 2016.
The runners up in the 2016 Kay Motsepe Schools Cup National Championships will get R600 000, while the bronze medallist will take home R 500 000. The fourth-placed stands to pocket R 400 000.
