The South African Men’s Olympic Team defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 in a practice match as they continue with preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games starting next month.

The clash took place at the Sundown’s training grounds in Chloorkop, near Midrand on Friday, 15 July 2016.

Goals from Menzi Masuku, Andile Fikizolo and Tashreeq Morris were enough to give Owen da Gama’s charges a convincing victory.

“This was a great match and we are very happy with the levels of fitness from the players. Masuku and Morris managed to play the whole match and were very influential, which was great to see. We are also very pleased with the return of Mngonyama and Ntshangase from injury after they could not take part in the COSAFA Castle Cup a few weeks ago,” said Da Gama.

“Secondly we wanted to test a few of the players by taking them out of their comfort zones. Mekoa was excellent at left back and Ntshangase was outstanding both in the midfield and at right back. Players like Malepe and Mvala are just amazing to watch and we are confident about the quality of players we are taking to the Olympic Games.”

The Olympic team will continue with the preparations over the weekend. They are scheduled to play another practice match on Monday, 18 July against Bidvest Wits at a time and venue still to be confirmed.
