The South African Senior Women’s National Team, Banyana Banyana took time off their training schedule to visit two schools in Tembisa, the location of their international friendly match clash with neighbours Zimbabwe on Sunday, 15 May 2016 at Makhulong Stadium.

The match kicks off at 15h00.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana made an appearance at Zitikeni Secondary and Mvelaphanda Primary schools much to the delight of the pupils who got autographs and also managed to pose for photos with their favourite players.

The two schools were also handed a national team jersey and tickets to attend the match.

“It is always a pleasure for us as players when we have to do such things – when you see the smile on the faces of the little ones, it also brings joy to us. They are fortunate to have this opportunity because growing up we could only see the players from a distance; mostly on television.

“So this is very important for us to give something back. And where possible, we want to do it ahead of every game,” said defender Noko Matlou.

“I hope they come and watch the game because it is a very special to play against Zimbabwe who are also going to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Having them at the stadium always gives us extra motivation and is a good reminder that we are not doing this for ourselves but for millions of South Africans.”

Meanwhile Zimbabwe has named a squad of 18 players for the match against South Africa.

The Zimbabwean squad is expected in the country on Friday, 13 May.

“The friendly match against Banyana Banyana is an important chance to test different combinations yet remaining very competitive,” said Mighty Warriors head coach Shadreck Mlauzi.

“It’s very important to play South Africa because they are also participating in the Olympics and that means we need to have a competitive attitude and mentality. I think it will be a very good challenge for both teams. It’s also a chance to gauge and improve our match fitness,” added Mlauzi.

The Rio Olympic Games start from 3 – 20 August.
