While the South African public has been hard on local match officials, CAF has continued to see value in them and Sunday sees referee Daniel Bennett assigned to take charge of the 2016 CHAN final between DR Congo and Mali.

Bennett will be joined by Stevens Khumalo as an assistant referee, an endorsement of local referees by the continental body which has continuously seen the value of their proficient input.

The CHAN final takes place on Sunday, 7 February and kicks off at 18h30.

SAFA’s Head of Referees Peter Sejake says CAF’s continued faith in South African officials vindicated his statement that our officials rank among the best on the continent and in the world.

“But they are only human and are prone to mistakes at times. We are proud that Bennett and Khumalo have so far represented South Africa very well in Rwanda, hence their appointment to officiate in the final of the CHAN tournament.

We are the first to admit when our match officials underperform, but when they do well we also need to applaud them. We can only wish them (Bennett and Khumalo) the best of luck in the final on Sunday and hope they maintain the high standards of refereeing associated with what has come out of this country regularly,” added Sejake.

Bennett and Stevens were also in charge of the tough quarter-final encounter between hosts Rwanda and the DR Congo that took place on Saturday, 30 January.

Earlier on Sunday, Guinea will lock horns with Cote d’Ivoire for a third place finish.

Kickoff is at 15h00.
