Following various reports in the media over the last few days regarding the coming FIFA Presidential elections, the South African Football Association (SAFA) reiterates its statement made last week that it has requested an update from the FIFA Presidential candidate, Mr Tokyo Sexwale, following a mandate to do so by the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC).

Mr Sexwale has not had an opportunity to present an update on his campaign since his endorsement by the NEC in October 2015 as a result of his commitments related to his campaign.

Due to the truncated campaign period occasioned by the scheduled election on 26 February 2016, the NEC empowered the SAFA Emergency Committee (EMCO) to deal with all matters such as these requiring the Association’s urgent attention since the NEC is scheduled to meet only on 26 March 2016.

“SAFA therefore reiterates its position that the meeting with Mr Sexwale was called merely to receive an update on the next steps in his campaign and to determine what further engagement he requires from the Association and not to convey a decision of the NEC on the viability or otherwise of Mr Sexwale’s candidacy, as some media reports indicate,” says SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.
