Banyana Banyana and Equatorial Guinea played to a goalless draw in the first leg of the fourth round of the 2016 Rio Olympic qualifier on Saturday, 3 October at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.

It was a good display by the host nation who had the best of chances in the match but failed to convert any that came their way.

The first of those chances came just 34 minutes into the match when defender out-jumped everyone only to see her header go wide after a corner kick.

But three minutes later the home team was caught napping but goalkeeper Roxanne Barker was alert in goals and saved a potential goal from Equatorial Guinea.

Just five minutes before the break, Banyana Banyana had the best opportunity of the half after a good buildup. A great defence-splitting pass from Sanah Mollo was met by Refiloe Jane who outsprinted the defence and shot past the visiting keeper, only for the upright to deny her a goal.

After the restart Jane was back in the thick of things – following a defensive blunder from Equatorial Guinea, she hurried her shot and it went wide.

In the 62 minute South Africa was denied what looked like a clear penalty when Mollo was hacked in the box after she beat her marker, but the referee waved play on.

What followed was perhaps the biggest miss of the day – another cross from Mollo, Jane leaves it for Jermaine Seoposenwe and with the waiting to receive the ball, she ballooned her shot.

And that’s that how it ended at Makhulong Stadium.

The two teams meet again in two weeks time on Sunday, 18 October 2015 at Estadio de Bata.

Kickoff is 16h00 local time in Bata (17h00 SA Time).

The winner of this match qualifies for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
