Banyana Banyana took time-off their training schedule ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympic qualifier against the Harambe Starlets of Kenya this weekend to interact with fans at Jabulani Mall in Soweto on Thursday morning (16 July) before joining Sasol in support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s campaign to step up for education.

Banyana Banyana host Kenya on Saturday, 18 July 2015 at the Dobsonville Stadium. Kickoff is at 15h00.

The Step Up for Education campaign came from a partnership between the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Department of Basic Education and the University of Fort Hare. The institute envisages transforming education and rural development through applied research, teacher and leadership development, community mobilization and building sustainable public institutions. It was launched to continue Mandela’s work in education and rural development.

Banyana Banyana players dropped off educational books at the forecourt of the Sasol Regina Mundi filling station in support of the initiative.

Members of the media, football fans, Sasol employees and the general public are urged to support Banyana Banyana and Sasol in their bid to collect ten thousand (10 000) educational books to improve literacy in the communities by bringing a book to the stadium on Saturday, 18 July.

There will be boxes placed at the stadium entry gates where the books can be dropped off.

“Saturday, 18 July is Nelson Mandela International Day and as Sasol there is an initiative that we do during Mandela month. This year we are collecting 10 000 books for education, and we decided to invite Banyana Banyana to be part of the initiative while they are in camp preparing for their Olympic qualifier against Kenya. We want to empower young girls and boys through education,” said Sasol Brand Marketing Specialist, Brenda Mopeli.

“We are sharing the same sentiments as Sasol, empowering kids in our communities through education and it is an honour as Banyana Banyana to share in the same vision as our sponsor, Sasol. We all know that the 18th of July is a big day, Mandela Day – and Mandela once said that education is a crucial instrument and tool to empower one’s mind and one’s life,” said Banyana Banyana midfielder Amanda Dlamini.

Banyana Banyana will also be doing their part for Mandela Day when they take to the field on Saturday.

“We will be dedicating our 90 minutes to Tata Mandela, it is really important for us. We are here today because of the sacrifices the likes of Nelson Mandela went through, so we are very excited, we will be paying homage to Madiba and continue his legacy,” added Dlamini.
