Absa Premiership champions Kaizer Chiefs ended the 2014/15 season with a 2-0 win over Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win for the Amakhosi was secured by first-half goals from Mandla Masango and Willard Katsande. The Chilli Boys, meanwhile, avoided the relegation zone despite the defeat and will play in next season’s Absa Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs had a few opening salvos, with the likes of Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Siphiwe Tshabalala shooting off target from long range in the early minutes.

However, the first clear chance went the way of Chippa when they gave William Twala a sight of goal in the 13th minute, only for the winger to see his low shot well saved by the legs of goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo.

The Amakhosi shrugged off the chance at the other end and soon claimed the opening goal. Bernard Parker provided an in-swinging cross from the left channel and Mandla Masango got ahead of his marker before steering a header into the net to make it 1-0 in the 25th minute.

Just over 10 minutes later the Soweto giants doubled their advantage. A cleverly-worked set piece saw Masango turn provider, as his cross picked out the unmarked Willard Katsande at the back post and the midfielder gleefully turned home his volley for 2-0.

Chippa opted for a double change at the start of the second half, with George Akpabio and Buyani Sali coming on for Siyabulela Shai and Gert Barends. The hosts immediately looked far more potent and Akpabio was unlucky to see a goal disallowed for an incorrect offside call in the 51st minute.

The Chilli Boys continued to dominate the champions in the second half, but the Amakhosi’s defence – as it has done for almost the whole season – stood firm and gave nothing away to see them to yet another three-point haul.

They had a scare when Chippa were awarded a penalty late on, but Mhlengi Cele’s spot kick hit the outside the post and bounced away to safety. Chiefs ended the season with 69 points and 21 wins under their belt – both new records for a 16-team PSL season.
