SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan has announced that Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund’s contract will not be renewed.

SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan has announced that Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund’s contract will not be renewed.

Dr Jordaan made the announcement at a press conference on Monday, 2 June 2014 at SAFA House.

Igesund, who took over the Bafana Bafana reigns on 1 July 2012, failed to fulfil two of his mandates – reaching the semi-finals of the 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations and qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Although Bafana Bafana were knocked out in the first round of the 2014 CHAN tournament in January this year, the SAFA President said the tournament did not form part of Igesund’s mandate.

“The national executive committee (NEC) informed Gordon Igesund that his contract will not be renewed when it expires on the 31 August 2014,” said Dr Jordaan.

“The search for the new coach will commence now and we are looking for a candidate who will take Bafana Bafana back to the glory days. He should be someone who takes us to the next level,” added Dr Jordaan.

While there won’t be any activity within the senior national men’s team until August due to the 2014 World Cup, Dr Jordaan said the new coach to take over the Bafana Bafana job will be named in due course.
