SA U 23 to depart on Wednesday

Due to the complicated circumstances occasioned by the selection of players, the Under-23 National Team is scheduled to depart on Wednesday, 23 November 2011.

The team, which was assembled at the weekend, had to secure visas for each Member of the Delegation and all players had to undergo a pre-competition medical test in Pretoria today (Monday, 21 November 2011).

Visas will only be ready by Wednesday, 23 November 2011 for those players who did not travel to Algeria last week to play in the friendly international matches against the Algerian National Team.

“We wanted to ensure that the team stays together and decided to keep them here at home to train together for the next two days whilst some of the players awaited their visas,” said Dr Robin Petersen, CEO of the South African Football Association (SAFA).

The team will open their account with a match against Ivory Coast on Sunday, 27 November 2011 in Marrakech.

Their next game is against Gabon on November 30 and the team will complete their group matches with an encounter against Egypt on 3 December.

“Since an earlier departure was not possible, the mini-training camp at home will add an opportunity to get the team to work together more efficiently” added Dr Petersen. “The team’s two-day training camp here at home is a vital preparatory step for this important tournament” he continued.
