Vodacom League play offs in full swing

Vodacom play offs day 2Local favourites Chippa United gave their fans something to cheer about with a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid at the University of the Western Cape Stadium on Day 2 of the 2011 Vodacom League National Play-Offs.

Having played a goalless draw against FC Buffalo the previous day, Chippa United enhanced their chances of progressing towards promotion to the National First Division, courtesy of a brace of goals from Andile Mbenyane, to see off the challenge of their Northern Cape opponents.

Meanwhile, over at the Phillipi Stadium, Roses United drew 1-1 with FC Buffalo, representing the Eastern Cape to keep pace with Chippa United at the top of the Coastal Group. Alex Ngomane gave the Free Staters the lead but a last ditch equaliser deep into referee’s added time by Loyolo Mbiko Nomdlelo denied them a perfect record after two matches.

In the later match in Phillipi, Baroka FC from Limpopo lived up to their lofty billing, turning in a consummate performance against a well-drilled and enterprising Highlands Park FC in the opening round of Inland Group fixtures.

Katlego Mashego underlined his growing reputation with an excellent finish after 18 minutes, running intelligently onto a pass behind the Highlands Park defence before neatly turning his marker inside out and slotting the ball into the net.

Thobani Mncwango doubled the lead three minutes before halftime, following a goalkeeping error and for the remainder of proceedings Baroka kept an iron grip on the midfield to coast their way to an opening victory affirming their credentials as one of the favourites to gain promotion.

In the other Inland Group match, Mpumalanga’s Sivutsa Stars overcame Garankuwa United, from North West 2-0 at U.W.C, with goals coming from Ennocent Mkhabela and Bongani Masinga.

On Thursday, the Phillipi Stadium will host Baroka FC and Sivutsa Stars in an Inland Group clash at midday, followed by Buffalo FC vs Durban Stars in a Coastal Group encounter at 15h00.

At U.W.C, Highlands Park face Garankuwa United in the Inland Group at 12h00, with Real Madrid meeting Roses United at 15h00 in the Coastal Group.
