Soweto LFA's demand Is off the mark

2010-05-01

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is disturbed by a series of distorted information relating to the Membership status of the Soweto Local Football Association (SLFA). In terms of the SAFA constitution, there are 52 Regions of SAFA that are demarcated in line with the country’s municipal boundaries. One of the SAFA Regions in the Gauteng Province is SAFA Johannesburg, which SLFA is an affiliate off.

The SLFA’s application to acquire a Regional status has been declined on Constitutional grounds; and SAFA has communicated the decision to the leadership of the Soweto Local Football Association.

The alignment of SAFA Regions with Municipal Boundaries will only be reviewed should the Demarcation Board review the Ward Delimitations, and SAFA’s highest decision making body, the General Council will have the final say on the matter.

The South African Football Association recognises Soweto Local Football Association as an affiliate of SAFA Johannesburg. Any other structure like SAFA Soweto is not recognised by SAFA; and it is unconstitutional.
