The final round of matches in the pool phase of the men’s Under-17 football competition at the 2012 Zone VI Games in Lusaka, Zambia, took place on Wednesday with the four semifinalists become known.
South Africa claimed top spot in Group A with a 4-1 victory over Seychelles, setting up a semi-final with runners-up in Group B, Angola. Lesotho and Zambia will contest the other Last 4 match.
South Africa’s win was achieved after goals from Fagrie Lakay, Siyanda Ngcobo, Bongane Mathebula and Thembinkosi Phiri, while there was huge jubilation in the Seychelles camp when they scored their only goal of the competition through Cafrine Graham with just two minutes remaining.
In the other match in Group A, Zambia were held 0-0 by Malawi, but still managed to secure second spot.
Lesotho emerged as winners of Group B after a 4-0 success over Swaziland. Mpho Makhaola, Tumelo Khutlang and a brace from Morapeli Lesoetsa gave them the victory.
Angola sealed their semi-final spot with a 2-0 success over Mauritius as Celestino Calueio Cassinda scored a brace for them.
That means South Africa take on Angola in the first semi-final on Friday at the Nkoloma Stadium on Friday, while Zambia entertain Lesotho in the second semi at the same venue at 16h00.
The winning semi-finalists will meet in the decider on Sunday at Nkoloma Stadium. The football competitions at the Zone VI Games are being run by the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA).
