DAY 5 Complete wrap at 2012 Zone VI U20 Games

2012-12-12

COSAFA LogoThe semi-final line-up for the women’s Under-20 competition at the 2012 Zone VI Games in Lusaka, Zambia has become known after the final round of pool matches were played on
Tuesday.

South Africa took top spot in the group with a 5-0 win over Zimbabwe, pushing their rivals into second place. Nomonde Nomtsheke, Chanelle Wiltshire and Alice Khosa all scored first-half goals for the South Africans, with Tshegofatse Makinta and Vuyo Mkhabela adding two more in the second period.

It sets up a semi-final meeting with Zambia on Thursday, after the hosts defeated Namibia 1- 0 in their final pool game on Tuesday. Zimbabwe and Namibia meet in the other semi.

There is a clearer picture emerging in the men’s Under-17 competition too after two more games played on Tuesday. In Group A, Botswana ensured that neither they nor Seychelles could qualify for the semifinals with a 5-0 win. Wakgotla Outlule, Tiroyaone Maome, Lefika Pheto, Kabelano Mooketsane and Thatayaone Ramatlapeng got the goals.
Botswana have three points from their four games and play no further part in the tournament, and while Seychelles have one more fixture, they cannot mathematically make
the top two in the pool.

In Group B, Lesotho and Namibia played to a 1-1 draw that leaves those two sides decently placed ahead of the final round of matches.

Namibia leads the standings with five points, but has now completed their four matches. Lesotho are a further point back with a game to go, while Angola (four points), Swaziland
(three) and Mauritius (two) are all still in contention.

In Wednesday’s final round of action, in Group A South Africa need a win against Seychelles to be sure of their qualification, as does Malawi against Zambia. Draws in both those
matches will see South African and Zambia though. In Group B, Swaziland must beat Lesotho to stand a chance of going through, while Angola needs just a draw against Mauritius.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals, to be played on Friday, with the third-place play-off scheduled for the following day. The winning semi-finalists will meet in
the decider on Sunday at Nkoloma Stadium.

The football competitions at the Zone VI Games are being run by the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA).
