The South African National Under 20 team, Amajita today (Wednesday, 8 August 2010) defeated National First Division side Jomo Cosmos 3-2 in a practice match that took place in Johannesburg.
The match was part of Amajita's preparation for the upcoming African Youth Championship return leg encounter against Congo on Saturday, 11 August 2012. The match is scheduled for Milpark Stadium. Kick off 19h00.
The 19th edition of the Under/20 championship is scheduled to take place in Algeria next year.
Four top African countries will automatically qualify for the 2013 FIFA Under/20 World Cup to be staged in Turkey later next year.
Amajita Head Coach Solly Luvhengo says it is imperative to qualify for Algeria since this will be a springboard for the World Cup qualification.
“What we wanted in this practice match was not a win but a good outing. I must say, I was impressed with the boys' attitude and hunger for success.
"Cosmos is a very organised team and coming up with a victory over a side who were campaigning in the Premier League last year is a really morale booster. This match has also given us an ideal preparation ahead of Saturday's match," said an excited Luvhengo.
With two days to go before the all important match against their Congolese counterparts, Luvhengo says today's result will mean nothing if they cannot convert the same performance against the Central African side.
"The confidence gained by the players after this victory is good for them but they understand that there is still a lot of work to be done. There is a lot at stake here and it is important that we keep our heads down, feet firmly on the ground and keep working hard, but this is definitely a step in the right direction and we should build on from here going forward," added Luvhengo.
