Basetsana Lose To Zambia In Qualifier
23 January 2010

South Africa’s National Under 20 side (Basetsana) will move on to the next round of the 2010 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying matches despite losing 2-1 away from home in Lusaka, Zambia.

South Africa were the first to score in the fifth minute though Bontle Mashilo of Dlala Ntombazana FC but Basetsana conceded a free kick in the 35th minute and Zambia equalized, the hosts then took the lead juust ten minutes after the restart and the match finished 2-1 in favour of Zambia.

Basetsana won six-nil (6-0) in the first leg in Eldorado Park earlier this year and will now go on to face Nigeria in the final qualifying two legged encounter.

Head Coach Augustine Makalakalane says he is proud of his team despite the loss and is confident that they can now take on Nigeria.

“I am very happy and proud of the girls’ performance; I’m obviously not happy about the result. It rained heavily before the match and that made the pitch heavy and so we could not play our normal game; we had to resort to playing long balls. We missed a lot of chances and I still believe that we should have scored more goals. We are ready for Nigeria; it is now or never so I say bring them on,” said Makalakalane.
